UFC Fight Island: What Max Holloway shouted in the octagon during demolition of Calvin Kattar is brilliant
Max Holloway put on a performance for the ages on Saturday night at UFC Fight Island.
Blessed took on the number sixth ranked featherweight Calvin Kattar in what was billed to be a barnstorming main event for the first of three fight island cards, but former champion Holloway stole the show.
The 29 year old landed an astounding – and UFC record – 445 significant strikes on Kattar over the 25 minutes of action to secure the unanimous decision victory, 50-43, 50-43, 50-42.
Holloway now has 17 featherweight wins in the promotion and that is also a record.
UFC president Dana White said that Holloway deserves another shot at the title next and he also said he wanted the fight stopped in the fourth round with Kattar taking massive damage.
Kattar did not face the media after the fight. He went straight to the hospital instead.
During the fifth round, Holloway started talking to the commentators mid-fight and was shouting inside the octagon and from the media tables where we sat, we could hear Holloway proclaim himself the best boxer in UFC.
Of course, he was answering the fact that Kattar had suggested he was the stronger boxer of the two, but he was talking to Daniel Cormier and Dan Hardy who he could hear discussing it at ringside!
White commented on Holloway’s showmanship during the fight at the after-show press conference.
“A lot of people that we respect and know a lot about this spot picked Kattar to win tonight. And let’s give Kattar the respect he deserves too, it takes two to make a great fight. Incredible.
“Holloway’s fun man, it’s crazy. I haven’t talked to Max about this and I don’t know if it’s 100 percent true, but I was hearing he didn’t even spar this camp. So to not spar for this camp and perform the way that he did, it’s pretty impressive. [He shouted in the cage tonight he was the best boxer in UFC], but he’s one of the all-time greats in fighting, period.”
