With their 113-103 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday, the Phoenix Suns saw their seven-game winning streak snapped in a clash of two of the best teams in the Western Conference. After the game, Suns coach Monty Williams praised his team’s effort despite playing on the second night of a back-to-back. He also praised the Clippers’ recently acquired guard Rajon Rondo for being a difference-maker.
According to Fox Sports’ Melissa Rohlin, Williams even compared Rondo to Paul.
Monty Williams on Rajon Rondo: “He’s a lot like Chris [Paul] in that way — wherever he goes, he makes the team better.”

While Rondo and Paul share similarities with their style of play, Williams’ comparison may have unintentionally referenced a video that went viral last year of a fan deliberately mistaking Rondo for Paul while inside a local sneaker shop, something which the two-time champion didn’t appreciate.
Aside from the hilarious trolling, Rondo and Paul also have an extensive beef history, including an on-court altercation in 2018 when Rondo was with the Los Angeles Lakers and CP3 was with the Houston Rockets.
Rondo was one of three Clippers who finished in double-figures against the Suns alongside All-Stars Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. Rondo ended up with 15 points, three rebounds, and nine assists in 19 minutes off the bench. CP3, meanwhile, recorded 13 points, seven rebounds, and three dimes for the Suns, who were coming off a thrilling overtime win over the Utah Jazz.
While Williams’ remark was definitely intended as a compliment to the four-time All-Star, his comparison of Rajon Rondo to Chris Paul might not be something that the former will fully appreciate given that meme moment from last year and their acrimonious history together.
