iPhone 12: 5G, price, release date and specs

Apple has announced the new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini for 2020, as well as two new iPhone 12 Pro models, offering several new upgrades on last year. Read on for everything you need to know on the price, release date, specs, colours and more.

The highlights of the new iPhone 12 range include new camera capabilities across the board, a new industrial design (as well as a new Blue colour variation), a more powerful new A14 processor and the inclusion of 5G.

Apple revealed the new models will not feature either EarPods and Apple power adapters in the box, expected to significantly reduce the waste Apple produces. There will be a USB-C to Lightning cable in the box.

iPhone 12 price – How much will it cost?

iPhone 12 pricing comes in at £799/£849/£949 for the 64GB/128GB/256GB models respectively while iPhone 12 mini costs £699/£749/£849 for the 64GB/128GB/256GB models.

The Pro pricing is £999/£1099/£1299 for the 128GB/256GB/512GB models and Pro Max is £1099/£1199/£1399 for the 128GB/256GB/512GB versions. All prices are the same in $.

iPhone 12 release date – When will it come out?

The new iPhone will be available to pre-order from October 16, with a release date of October 23. The 6.1-inch Pro model shares these dates.

The new mini and Pro Max will be available to pre-order on November 6. The release date for the smallest and biggest iPhones is set for November 13.

iPhone 12 design – What will it look like?

The new design sports an industrial design that harkens back to iPhone 5 and Apple refers to as “Aerospace-grade aluminium edges.” On top of the new looks, it is splash, water and dust resistant, with an IP68 rating. The phones sport a “Ceramic Shield,” which offers four times better drop performance from iPhone 11.

The full set of colours for are as follows: Black, White, Red, Blue and Green. The new Pro and Pro Max are available in Gold, Silver, Graphite and Blue.

iPhone 12 camera – A new focus on low-light

The new iPhone sports two new camera sensors for improved photography, these being 12-megapixel ultra-wide and 12-megapixel wide lenses with f/2.4 and f/1.6 apertures respectively. The cameras can achieve 2x optical zoom out and digital zoom up to 5x.

Apple is touting a much-improved Night Mode as well as the introduction of Smart HDR 3 with Scene Detection and the addition of Deep Fusion to the regular iPhone. The returning Portrait mode offers advanced bokeh and Depth Control effects.

The new phones are both capable of HDR video recording with Dolby Vision up to 30fps, 4K video recording at 24/30/60fps and 1080p recording at 30/60fps. These modes can take advantage of cinematic video stabilisation.

iPhone 12 specs – How powerful will it be?

The new iPhones feature the new A14 chip, which is the first smartphone chip using the 5nm process and is “the fastest CPU in any smartphone” while offering a 50% GPU from last year’s iPhone. The regular models feature 4GB RAM while the Pro models include 6GB.

Apple touts the mini will offer up to 15 hours of video playback and 50 hours of audio playback while regular model is set to manage up to 17 hours video playback and up to 65 hours of audio playback. Both phones are capable of 20W wired charging and 15W charging via MagSafe (7.5W charging via Qi).

All the new models support 5G, with Apple working with Verizon in the US offer mmWave 5G. mmWave 5G won’t be available outside the US, but the introduction of the latest connectivity technology to Apple is expected to drive the industry forward nonetheless.

iPhone 12 MagSafe – new wireless charging tech revealed

The new iPhone is being released alongside new cases and a wireless charger that works together seamlessly to help you easily charge your device wirelessly.

The new charging setup brings back the MagSafe moniker from the MacBook. You can get 15W wireless charger from MagSafe. This will also enable other accessories to connect magnetically to the back of the iPhone. A MagSafe Duo charger will allow you to charge you iPhone and Apple Watch at the same time.

iPhone 12 screen – A huge improvement on the iPhone 11

While it isn’t quite 120Hz (60Hz, in fact), the new screen for the 2020 models is exciting regardless. Last year, only the Pro models got the new Super Retina XDR display. This year, the 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch regular models get the impressive tech too.

Both panels are OLED, feature a 625 nit typical max brightness and a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating. The mini model having a 2340×1080 resolution and 476 ppi pixel density and the regular model offering a 2532×1170 resolution and 460 ppi pixel density.

The iPhone 11 Pro displays of last year were stunning so it’s exciting to see the technology brought down to the cheaper devices.
